Who is this for?

The Char-Griller Charcoal Grill/Smoker is one of the best beginner smokers that is a classic introduction to smoking. If you’ve been grilling for years and now want to take that grilling up to the next level by trying smoking, then this is the model for you. But even experienced barbecue lovers recommend it because it works so well. It is a little on the larger side, so it would be best for homes with decks or backyards and the space to grill. It probably is too large for most apartments and condos.

What’s included?

You get the complete Char-Griller Charcoal Grill/Smoker, which comes with the grill body itself, a warming rack, an adjustable cooking grate, an adjustable fire grate, a heat gauge, and an easy dump ash pan. The base is also included. You get complete assembly instructions, as well as general instructions on how to use both the grill and the smoking features. However, it does not come with a cover or any grilling tools.

Overview of features

Heavy gauge steel construction ensures that this Char-Griller Charcoal Grill/Smoker will last you through many warm months of grilling and barbecuing. Then it’s painted with a textured tough powder coat to protect it and last for years. The outside is classic black, with wood accents like the cool-touch handle, front shelf, and side shelf.

The base has two great wheels and two rubberized feet for stability. The double bottom of the cooker itself withstands the constant high temperatures and flames. The flanged hood is air tight and comes with its own heat gauge. A fire grate is adjustable, so that you can control the temperature to hot, medium, or warm.

The lower cooking grate is actually made up of multiple grates, so you can lift each section without removing the whole thing. The grates are cast iron, a classic material for even heating and cooking that perfectly lock in flavor. Easy to clean out as well after you’ve done cooking.

When both the main grill and warming rack are combined, you get 1,063 sq. in. of total cooking area. You’ll also notice the smokestack, which lets the low, slow heat permeate throughout your meats and veggies inside the smoker.

As for overall size, this grill/smoker is 49” high x 29” deep x 50” long. It weighs 110.9 lbs.

One feature it doesn’t have is an offset firebox, which are more common on regular smokers.

Getting the most from your grill/smoker

When it comes time to grill a perfect steak at high heat, all you need to do is open up all four vents, build up a regular charcoal fire, set your meat on top of the cooking grate, and close the lid. For long and slow barbecue cooking, you will open one bottom vent and one top vent on the opposite side.

Build up a fire on one side of the grill above the open vent. Then lay your meat on the cooking grate under the opposite side of the fire and under the second open vent. The meat will smoke for a long time! The smoke comes out of the smokestack.
