Oklahoma Joe’s Highland Reverse Flow Smoker Review

The Oklahoma Joe’s Highland Reverse Flow Smoker is not hard to assemble, made out of quality materials that will last through season after season, and gives you plenty of space to cook for a party. Between the removable baffles and the different positions for the smokestack, you can customize this smoker to fit your needs.

Who is this for?

This Oklahoma Joe’s smoker is for passionate barbecue enthusiasts who want a dedicated piece of equipment specifically designed for smoking. This requires assembly and plenty of tinkering with the baffles and dampers. It’s recommended for anyone who’d like to graduate from a regular grill to a smoker or for those who have plenty of experience with the low and slow type of barbecuing this requires. It is large and heavy, so it’s best for homeowners and would be too big for apartments.

What’s included?

Inside the box, you get the complete Oklahoma Joe’s Highland Reverse Flow Smoker itself, which has the cooking chamber, offset firebox, and stand. It also comes with everything needed for assembly and instructions. It does not come with barbecue tools or a specialized cover. You’re advised to have weather protection when it rains.

Overview of features

There are great features in this smoker. It’s all coated in a high-temperature paint to prevent peeling and cracking. One of the best things about this Oklahoma Joe’s Reverse Flow Smoker is that you get four baffles. These are made of porcelain covered plating which are removable, placed under the cooking grates. These baffles help the reverse heat flow all the way around your cooking grate. The cooking grate itself gives you 620 sq. in. of space.

You also get two locations to put the smokestack – either on top or off the side. Use the dampers for more customized heat and smoke control. You can also use the main chamber as a charcoal grill.

The firebox is lined in 2.5 mm cold-rolled steel. There’s also a grate in the firebox, giving you an additional 260 sq. in. of cooking space for smaller things like vegetables, brats, or hot dogs. Inside the firebox is a stainless steel charcoal basket. That helps contain your fire and make it easier to maintain while you’re cooking.

There is a cool touch handle, a high quality temperature gauge built right into the lid, and the front metal shelf is expanded for more exterior space. Below on the stand is an addition shelf to store your smoking tools, seasonings, and napkins.

For dimensions, it’s 57” wide, 33.5” deep, and 53” high, with a weight of 181 lbs. It sits securely on its wheeled base.

Get the most from your smoker

Traditional offset smokers work by creating a fire inside the firebox to produce smoke and heat. That smoke travels through your smoke chamber to cook your food and out through the smokestack. With this Oklahoma Joe’s Highland Reverse Flow Smoker, the smokestack is positioned near the firebox.

The heat comes out of the firebox, passes through the baffles and underneath the cooking grate, then stops at the opposite wall and reverses to go back over your meat and out the smokestack. You will notice lots of radiant heat off the baffles.

Don’t forget that you can also use this as a regular grill. Simply place charcoal or other fuel in the bottom of the cooking chamber, light it, and you can heat other food in the firebox at the same time.

Many buyers have suggested adding a gasket and updated door latches, updating the temperature gauge, and making other modifications to truly bring this smoker to a top level. You should probably seal gaps with black silicone to prevent heat escaping, too.

Alternative Product

While this smoker is excellent, you might prefer the Laguna Grills Big Horse Smoker Grill. You can feed up to fifteen people with it, the smoking chamber as a grilling grate for plain grilling, and is also an excellent smoker. So, no matter which type of outdoor cooking method you prefer, you can try that with this model.

When you’re looking for an excellent smoker/grill combination piece of equipment that is customizable to your outdoor needs, you’ll love the Oklahoma Joe’s Highland Reverse Flow Smoker. It helps bring your grilling and barbecuing up to the next level of challenge and performance.
